September Across Our Homes

A new school year, three birthdays and food from around the world, plus new faces joining our teams.

September Across Our Homes
September meant a fresh start in all of our homes. There were new routines, new faces and plenty to celebrate.

Back to school
For many of our young people, September meant the start of a new school year. There were nerves and excitement in equal measure, and not only for the young people. Strong links with local schools helped the new term get off to a good start, and homework routines are now in place. One young person started at a new school after moving in over the summer holidays.

Out and about
A teacher training day in the first week of term was a good excuse for a trip to We The Curious, the interactive science museum in Bristol. Alton Towers got another visit, and there was bowling, an inflatables park and plenty of gaming and baking back at home. Other young people spent their weekends walking in different parts of the Forest of Dean. One kept up weekly football sessions at a local club and is growing in confidence on and off the pitch.

Birthdays and food from around the world
We celebrated three birthdays this month, including a milestone 18th. There were balloons, banners, presents and a meal out with housemates. One young person also had VIP tickets to a concert, which made for a long day and some great memories.

At one home, cooking nights were the highlight of the month. The young people cooked dishes from different countries and learned about each country through its food. Everyone got stuck in.

Big steps forward
One young person passed their probation in a new job working in a school. Another has secured a paid role using their own experience to gather feedback from young people across health services. We are very proud of both.

Our teams
We welcomed new colleagues across the homes this month, and three more Therapeutic Care Workers will join us in the next four weeks. Two care workers celebrated two and three years with us. One team member passed their probation, and two have started their Level 3 qualification.

Training carried on alongside the day job. Staff completed PRICE training on understanding and calming difficult situations, plus medication training. Our in-house registered nurse also delivered sessions on safeguarding and wound management. New starters and experienced staff trained side by side, and that mix of fresh eyes and experience made the sessions even more valuable.

A busy, happy month. October brings a maths exam, half term and three new members of the team. Want the detail? Every home has its own page with the full month.
