A Job, a School Place and a Garden Full of Vegetables

 August at Alison House
Two new arrivals, a first job, a garden makeover and a strong QA inspection.
Two new young people moved into Alison House this month and have both settled quickly. Those already living here made them welcome, and firm friendships have formed.
Achievements
One young person has started a job at a local café and has settled in there well. We are proud of her and of the motivation she is showing.
Another starts school in September. She has picked out her first day outfit and has her sights set on becoming a paramedic.
A third has begun volunteering at a community café in town, where she has been showing people how to make different coffees. She is enjoying the role.
A fourth passed her Level 2 Functional Skills in English. Her maths exam is in October and we wish her well.
Activities
Trips this month took in the beach, Airhop, a dessert parlour, farm parks and crazy golf. Evenings at home have been given over to pamper nights, films and arts and crafts, including painting and diamond art. One young person designs and paints nails, and the others are making the most of it.
One went camping for the first time and has vowed never to do it again. She had a lovely time, but next time she would like a hotel.
The garden
Everyone got involved. One young person built a relaxation garden and planted vegetables, which have been turning up at dinner, the ones the rabbits left anyway. They painted the garden furniture and the fence and added solar lights. Once the work was done they got in the pool to enjoy it.
The team
The staff have worked hard this month and management are grateful for it. They have built strong relationships with both new young people while developing their own practice, completing PRICE, fire and health and safety training, and PACE with our psychologists.
One Therapeutic Care Worker has completed his first year at Alison House. He is a solid member of the team and is looking to progress as his skills and knowledge grow. Our Registered Manager has completed twelve years with the homes.
QA inspection
A local placing authority carried out a QA inspection this month and the report is a strong one. One young person told the inspector: "From the bottom of my heart, this is the first place where I've felt cared about. The people genuinely care about me."
The inspector found substantial evidence that young people at Alison House are happy, settled and benefiting from experiences that improve their wellbeing and quality of life, and noted that they spoke warmly about the home, the staff team and the opportunities open to them. A social worker told the inspection that communication is excellent, the environment is good and she has no concerns.
September brings a new school term, a maths exam and whatever the rabbits leave.
